Why it matters

Nephrology – more commonly known as the study of kidney function and kidney disease – is crucial for better health outcomes, especially among smokers, the overweight, the elderly, and Black, Asian, Hispanic, and Latino communities.

Around the world, more than 800 million people have chronic kidney disease (CKD). Research suggests it impacts up to 10% of the global population. In a small percentage of cases, kidney disease can eventually lead to kidney failure and an ongoing need for peritoneal dialysis, haemodialysis, or a kidney transplant. Since 2000, CKD is one of the few non-communicable diseases in which associated deaths have risen. By 2040, scientists believe it will be the fifth highest cause of years of life lost globally1.
